1 dead after Dodge Ram strikes riding lawn mower

A 74-year-old man was killed Friday after his riding lawn mower was struck by a Dodge Ram truck on Greenhorn Road in North Wilkesboro.

On Friday, at about 6 p.m., Daryl Connely West, 74, of Elkin, was attempting to turn around a riding lawn mower on Greenhorn Road, near Cottonwood Road, when the lawn mower was struck by a 2016 Dodge Ram truck that was traveling east on Greenhorn Road, said Master Trooper Christopher Casey, with the N.C. Highway Patrol.

West was critically injured in the accident and taken by Emergency Medical Services personnel to Hugh Chatham Health in Elkin for treatment.

He died from his injuries, Casey said.

Dillon Scott Anderson, 31, of Traphill, the driver of the Dodge truck, was not injured.

No charges will be filed in the case, Casey said.

During the on-scene investigation by the N.C. Highway Patrol, the road was partially closed for about an hour.
